The Shively Police Department is organized into four divisions. They are COMMAND, PATROL, C.I.D. (Criminal Investigations Division), and COMMUNICATIONS. Below is a brief description of the duties and makeup of each division.
COMMAND

Colonel Ralph Miller, Jr. [E-mail] was appointed as Chief of Police in 1996. And is a former explorer with the Shively Police Cadet Program. |
 |
Major Martin Kleier [E-mail] oversees day to day operations of the department. |
PATROL
The patrol, or uniformed division makes up the largest portion of the police department. It consists of three platoons of full-time officers supplemented by a flex platoon of part-time officers. Each of the three full time platoons consists of a Sergeant and four officers. The flex platoon currently consists of four part-time officers who fill in as needed to ensure adequate police coverage in the city. Patrol officers handle all the day to day tasks of report writing, answering calls for service, traffic enforcement, and crime prevention. These officers are who the majority of people deal with on a routine basis.

CRIMINAL INVESTIGATIONS DIVISION
Whenever a crime requires more resources and time than the patrol division can provide, then the CID or Criminal Investigations Division is called in. Some examples of crimes that CID handles are homicide, rape, robbery and other violent crimes, major burglaries and fraud cases. They also handle surveillance operations and along with the patrol division the tracking and apprehension of fugitives. Our detectives can be contacted at the following email address: Det. Chris Ashby [E-Mail] and Det. Josh Myers [E-mail]
COMMUNICATIONS
The Communications division is the civilian component of the police department. Although Telecommunications Officers (TCO's) are non-sworn, they play a vital role in the department. Communications handles the calls for service from the public and other agencies whether received via 911, non-emergency phone lines, teletype, or from individuals who walk into the station. These individuals compile the necessary information from whoever is requesting service and dispatch the appropriate resources as needed. Communications also handles all record keeping of reports, citations, subpoenas and runs that the department processes. All communications personnel are state certified as Telecommunications Operators during their first year of service as required by Kentucky Revised Statutes chapter 15 and 15A.
